Walsh also realised the importance of design for the Irish market and how the existing situation in Ireland in the early 1960s (including protective tariffs) meant that a strategy would be required to encourage appreciation and promotion of good design. Kilkenny Design was established in 1963 by the Irish government at Kilkenny Design Centre in the heartland of Ireland, Kilkenny City. After the dive we went back into the classroom where we downloaded my pics to review and discuss the results and the settings and techniques that I used to achieve them. The one obvious weakness to my setup was the very short strobe arm, which was demonstrated by hand holding the strobe. Of course they were able to sell me a much better solution. While it was pricey I felt I got full value as I now had a very good foundation on which to build. Throughout the remainder of the week, diving on my own, my photo results got to the point where I was consistently shooting pics that I was very happy with.

The USU Design/Build/Fly team, pictured above, took 22 out of 107 teams, one of their highest scores in recent years. Our team name is ‘Anteater Flight Club,’ since we are working on the ‘Design, Build, Fly’ team and our primary focus is on the aero part of the project directly correlated with the flight aspect. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design Build Fly (AIAA DBF) competition is an annual aircraft design competition. Each year students are tasked with designing, building, and flying unmanned, electric powered, remote control aircraft. These aircraft are required to meet unique and very specific design requirements and mission profiles. Each year the missions change forcing teams to come up with completely new aircraft year after year. Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance.

The fuselage has a hinge onthe top skin just behind the nose to allow the payload compartment to swing open for easyloading of the passenger payload and easy dumping of the water payload. The aircraft weighs less than 1.5 kg empty,which is achieved through a combination of composite structures. The fuselage is a custom-molded sandwich panel; this provides a very light but strong structure that can carry the payloads. The airframe is supported by a carbon fiber tube that extends from the frontof the payload compartment to the tail.
